Still chugging away on this story. So far: *11 pages more or less done *5 additional pages inked and ready for toning I'm hoping to get this completely finished by the end of the year, but I'm starting to think this may be unrealistic if this story's going to be 40+ pages... Booty from SF Zine Fest and APE 2011! 10/20/2011
Long time no update! SF Zine Fest and APE were wonderful. Aside from selling comics, I made some pretty awesome purchases at both cons. Behold! Papercutter (Tugboat Press): An award-winning comic anthology I discovered at SF Zine Fest this year. I was really impressed with how strong a lot of the stories were in here. I've included my two favorite issues above. Issue 10's feature story was "Willy" by Damien Jay. The story was set in a quasi-medieval world, and was incredibly eerie, engaging, and hard to get out of your head after reading it. While visiting his website, I noticed he has a series of other comics set in the same world which I am very interested in buying. Issue 8 included an autobiographical comic by Corinne Mucha called "Growing Up Haunted". This story focused on Mucha's childhood fear of being kidnapped in the night by a group of witches she believed to be living in her house. This story had me laughing out loud a number of times. All in all, I can assure you none of my Papercutter purchases were regretted afterwards. Amazing Everything (Scott C.): I'm a long-time fan of this guy. I'm more interested in his Great Showdowns series, however his playful style and awesome watercolor skills made this well worth the purchase for me. And he signed it too! Yay! Hark! A Vagrant (Kate Beaton): It's hard to find someone who doesn't like Kate Beaton. Her take on famous literature and history is fresh and extremely funny. When signing my book, I asked her to draw me a picture of Jane Eyre (I'm a fan of the book and she had done some other comics on it). The left picture was the result. She even got the umlauts on my name right! I was super pleased. Habibi (Craig Thompson) I wasn't even aware Craig Thompson was going to be at APE until I saw him at the Lee's Comics booth. I was impressed at how patient and friendly he was with everyone in line, despite the ridiculous number of books he was signing that day. Additionally, I really appreciated his encouraging words and advice about comic-making he gave me while signing my book. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to read Habibi yet, but judging by how much I adored Blankets, I'm sure I'll love it. Eight Herbs Mtn: The Rice Patty Kid (Ben Costa): Last year at APE, I purchased Ben Costa's other book, Pang: The Wandering Shaolin Monk, and have been hooked ever since. Despite graduating with an East-Asian studies minor, my focus was more on Japan, so I know very little about Chinese history. This is part of the reason why I love Ben Costa's work so much. His comics are informative and hilarious at the same time and I really look forward to buying up more of his stuff in the future once he releases it. Woe is Me 08/20/2011
I’ve undergone some minor set-backs with my comic in the past couple months. The worst of it happened about a month ago when my cat decided to vomit all over the keyboard of my laptop. After taking it in to a tech place, I was informed that the motherboard had been fried and I would need to get a new computer. Thankfully, a kindly coworker took pity on me and helped me buy parts and put together a new desktop computer. Right now I have the whole system set up in my room and it’s functioning magnificently. Now, to get back to that comic… Working on a New Comic... 06/24/2011
I've been batting this story idea around in my head for a while now. It doesn't have a title yet, but boiled down, it's a romance/drama that takes place in high school. It's pretty different than anything I've tried before, and I've been working hard to stifle my crippling self-doubt that the comic won't turn out well. I've come close to abandoning the project several times now in favor of working on something more familiar. I really do want to challenge myself though, so I'm working to make this my best comic evar. Wish me luck, imaginary readers! Fanime '11 05/31/2011
Fanime is officially over and, as always, I enjoyed myself thoroughly. The majority of my time was spent chilling in the Artist's Alley helping my BAAU friends out with their sales, although I also had some time to wander around the convention center and waste my money on things I didn't need. During my time at Fanime, I also had a chance to network a little with some cool comic creators. One of which was Bryan Wong, my new-found friend who also contributed to BAAU Down 10 (you can check out his newly-made site here). We actually ended up doing a fun little doodle trade. Bryan's is featured on the right. ----> As far as my comics go, I ended up selling a lot more copies of The Y-Man than I had originally thought, which was a delightful surprise. The next conventions I'll be selling at are Zine Fest (September 3 - 4) and APE (October 1 - 2). See you there, imaginary readers! Done and Done 05/13/2011
What what? Zoë updates after long last! A couple weeks ago I finished that horror-esque comic I mentioned way back when, and I've already sent it in for printing. The story will also be included in this year's Bay Area comic anthology, BAAU DOWN 10. Both the book and the individual copies will be available at Fanime this year, if any of my imaginary readers are interested. In other news, I'm thinking of renovating the site a little. Maybe adding a "shop" section? I don't know. More musings about this later. Really, It's Been Too Long... 10/23/2010
Hello ladies and gentlemen of the internets. I am proud to announce that I do in fact have a job now. Thank you, thank you, please-- enough clapping. As of September, I've been working at this neat, little place called OnLive. If you have some time, check out their site. They're an amazing company! As far as comics are concerned, I've kind of discontinued that webcomic I started a couple months ago. I'm not abandoning the project by any means, but I found the format I was working in limiting, so I'm planning on tackling it again at a later date. That aside, I'm currently working on a 10 page horror comic for my unofficial BAAU comic meet-up group. I already have it scripted and sketched out, so I hope to have the finished product within the next couple months or so. We'll see how that goes. 'Till then, I'll be working at working hard, as usual. August Update 08/02/2010
After a month of procrastination, I've finally uploaded the first two pages of my new webcomic. As you can probably deduce from the title, it's a autobiographical comic following my life after college. I'm planning on using this comic as an opportunity to explore different comic styles and methods, and am not too concerned with creating a final, polished piece as I have been in the past. With any luck, I'll be posting a new page every Monday, so stay tuned. Post-Graduation Happenings 07/02/2010
So after graduating a few weeks ago, I've finally moved back to Palo Alto and am temporarily staying with family 'till I find a steady job. As far as art and comics go, I haven't had too much time to finish anything. For the time being, I'm putting my Theseus comic on hold until my schedule becomes more regular, although I've been really itching to start up a weekly webcomic. If things free up, I might try to get the first page done in the next few days. We'll see how that goes. Aside from that, I've recently joined the BAAU (Bay Area Artists Unite) community online. They're a nice bunch of people and I'm having fun getting acquainted with all of the members on the BAAU forums. If you're a Bay Area artist maybe you should check them out too.
